Discussions of technology policy at the Municipal level

Signing petitions: Ottawa (municipal) green budget, One Public School System for Ontario

As someone who is hosting a few petitions, I also want to point out some other interesting petitions I have signed. Municipally I have signed a Green Budget Petition, and provincially I signed the "One Public School System for Ontario" Petition.

The Ottawa-Municipal budget petition is an online petition. I don't know how much value these have, unless they are also being turned into an e-mail letter writing campaign. Politicians don't tend to give online petitions any credibility as the online culture makes forging names/etc much more prevalent than is the case for offline paper petitions. This isn't a technological difference (paper petitions are easy to forge signatures), but a cultural one.

This is an edited for formatting followup letter to 2006 OCDSB Zone 9 Trustee Candidate Rob Campbell.

Thank you for your quick reply. I have posted all 3 letters to http://www.digital-copyright.ca/node/2686

Different aspects of FLOSS excite different people. While it is true that with FLOSS there is no marginal costs for licensing, this doesn't mean it is free/gratis to use. Any use of software has costs associated with it, including administrative, training and support costs. Many of these costs are fixed costs, and do not rely on the number of computers using the software, which itself simplifies many problems.

School Board elections: Talking to candidates:

I live in Zone 9 for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, with my current trustee being Lynn Graham. I looked at the current list of candidates, and wrote to Rob Campbell.

The following message contains three letters.

  • A letter to Laura McAlister, Superintendent of Instruction, that was copied to my trustee
  • A letter to Rob Campbell that included a copy of the previuos letter (See copy sent to CLUE's general discussion list)
  • A reply from Rob Campbell
