Obama DOJ Sides With RIAA

Not really news, but a SlashDot article is a good reminder to those that forgot that the DMCA was a bill brought to us by the US Democrats -- not "Bush". Some thought there would be change with this administration on key areas such as the new economy, but signs so far have suggested otherwise.

I think that's the new IPEC department

Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC) seems to be the department responsible for something like that. It was created by the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-403), signed Oct. 13, 2008"

The Oct 13 date is suspicious. I think it got rammed through during the banking meltdown.

IPEC a new IP czar that -appears- to the following:
- Seize any media or content at the US border under suspicion of infringement. (Nice iPod. Mine now.)
- Inform paying IP holding members of specific infringement.
- Prosecute civil cases on behalf of IP holders by the federal government (giving proceeds to IP holders).
- Add any infringement using the internet to the list of "computer crimes" (infringing a song now on same status as hacking a bank)
- Adds any infringing use of a trademark as "counterfeiting"
- Makes special funds available to state governments by passing laws they agree with
- doubling existing damages. (6x if counterfeiting)
- Prioritizes US companies over foreign.
- Priority to get non-US countries to obey
- Part of the executive branch and answers only to the President, but teaches FBI and local law enforcement how to do their job.
