A Toronto Star article by Haroon Siddiqui suggests that, "Not all opposition to funding religious schools is driven by bigotry. But much of it is, as candidates from the election trenches attest."
Given what I have heard in this debate, I agree. In my case I believe in a single school system and abolishing all publicly funded separate schools in Ontario. But from what I have heard there are many in Ontario that think that having a separate Catholic board is fine, but separate Protestant, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim or Jedi school boards are not OK.
In my mind all the arguments I have heard from Dalton McGuinty (Liberal candidate in my riding) are not arguments against Tory's origional plan, but arguments against the existing separate Catholic board. But Mr. McGuinty has stated he supports the separate Catholic board.
I agree with Haroon Siddiqui that this position based on a form of bigotry. It should be something that Ontario citizens are embarrassed about, not because our Premier holds this position, but that there seems to be a very large percentage of Ontario citizens that he is agreeing with.
