P2P key to future Internet

Bill St.Arnaud of CANARIE has posted another letter into his mailing list detailing the importance of moving away from thinking of the Internet as a traditional telecommunications medium, and away from the services offered by traditional suppliers (phone or cable companies).

You can see part of the problems we are facing in the policy arena. The video from the FTTH Council talks about the need for governments to not put barriers against technologies (such as P2P), sentiments that are often turned on their head by incumbent telecos/broadcast/content companies to justify competitive attacks against new media (As seen in the Net Neutrality debate, DRM in "Copyright" debate, etc). This transition from incumbents to new media innovation is unfortunately not always easy to explain to policy makers, so we are stuck having to expect some mistakes along the way.
