CIPPIC replies: Windsor West Green Party candidate

Received from Rob Spring

Music File-sharing:

;:File-sharing technologies offer new opportunities and must not be suppressed. However, as with many other new technologies, the development of file-sharing protocols have presented challenges and issues which must be addressed.

Technological Protection of Copyrighted Materials:

;:When used, TPMs must be respected and software or methods which circumvent them should be outlawed. However, I personally believe we must review when TPMs are used and explore opportunities to release more material into the public realm under the open-source concept.

Educational Use of Internet Materials:

ISP Liability for copyright infringement:

;:NO. However, if an ISP is found to be intentionally assisting or directly aware of illegal activity on their network they should be held accountable. The definition of what constitutes intentionally assisting or being directly aware must be well defined and reasonable.

What is your position on the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage's proposed "notice and takedown" scheme requiring ISPs to remove content on the sole basis of alleged copyright infringement?

;:Opposed as written.

Open Source Software:

;:The Green Party of Canada has provided for this directly in its platform document. We wholeheartedly support the increased use and development of open-source software. I also believe this type of strategy should be applied to other types of intellectual property.

;:SPAM is not only an inconvenience but it is a burden on the entire network and an extreme waste of resources on many levels. Those found to be sending mass-mail that is unwanted or has not been requested must be dealt with in a manner that discourages others from the same behaviour. I can not pretend to have the answer for how we fix this problem at this time, but I can commit to making the issue a priority of any federal government I am a part of.

National ID cards:

;:100% opposed!

;:..."The Greens today are no longer a fringe player in Canada. With 5-per-cent national support, they're closer than ever to winning a seat in federal politics. In British Columbia, they have the backing of 7-per-cent of the electorate." Globe & Mail (May. 21, 2004)
