Copyright lawyer Howard Knopf has posted a summary of what he expects to see in 2007.
There are rumours of a copyright bill being tabled, possibly in the first few days of when parliament returns on January 29. While I am excited about the increased interest, I am not convinced about the timing of a bill. If I were the Conservatives I would try to delay this one until after an election as this is a "no win" situation. The conservatives have to choose between opposing the anti-private-property lobbying from the USTR (United Stated Trade Representative) and the well financed foreign major labels/studios (and the executives of a few confused self-called "creator" groups), or greatly harming the interests of a majority of Canadian creators and other citizens.
I hope that everyone who is opposed to US-style DMCA rules which revoke the rights of owners of legally purchased media and owners of computing hardware will let their members of parliament know. They should send letters to their own MPs, and sign the petitions. If they want to write to the Ministers involved they should ensure that they send a copy to their own MP.
