Letter to Joy Smith, M.P.: Happy World Teachers Day // update on Copyright.

Dear Joy Smith, M.P.

First I would like to wish you a Happy World Teacher Day. Even though my wife is a highschool teacher, I managed to forget until I heard an M.P. making a statement on this during question period.

In the last parliament you were very involved in copyright as it related to the educational community. I was told by James Rajotte, M.P., that "copyright legislation will likely be addressed in the House of Commons during this session". <http://www.digital-copyright.ca/node/2706>

I am wondering if you have been involved in the negotiations towards this new bill? This is a different dynamic than when you were an opposition MP, and hopefully the Conservative government will hear what you have to say. I have not been happy with the replies the wider community has been receiving from Bev Oda, the current Heritage Minister, on this issue. <http://www.digital-copyright.ca/node/2714> The Minister of Industry has not replied to our questions at all.

If you would like to get together to talk more about this, I can be made available. I believe there are free market solutions available to the educational sector to largely solve this problem without either an exception to copyright, or a massive levy system that would extract from already tight educational budgets.

Thank you.
