Support from electronic music community
I visited N.Y.C.E. Records on Osborne to see if the folks around there would support the Petition for Users Rights. I was impressed to see the enthusiasm from small artists, music lovers and especially DJs. A possible reason is that DJs who spin electronica have a fond appreciation of the value of "sampling" from tracks -- using snippets of vocals, melodies, bass lines, etc. during live mixes. Among our community there is a general understanding that it's OK to use small samples from other artists' tracks; it's part of the art of mixing. Many in the community I've talked to also seem concerned that changes to Canadian copyright law might only benefit recording industry giants anyway, without providing any benefits to those that really need it: small, independent artists.
