Connecting with candidates so you can reconnect with your new MP

Last election I had a chance to connect with Mr. McGuinty very early, in fact as soon as I heard that he was seeking the nomination for the riding. This worked out well as a conversation we had before the election was then able to slide right into a conversation after the election.

While I would prefer to just continue that conversation, politics is always uncertain. There is a very close race in Ottawa South between incumbent Mr. McGuinty and the conservative challenger, Mr. Alan Cutler.

On Saturday afternoon I dropped off an envelope with Mr. Cutler's office. It contained the text of the form letter (personalized to him), a copy of our petition, a copy of a newspaper article about the Bulte scandal, and a few CDs : Ubuntu Linux, TheOpenCD, and a CD containing Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning and the LAFKON trusted computing video.

After he received the package, he replied to one of my earlier emails so that I could post something to our BLOG.

My hope is that whoever wins, I will be able to continue the conversation that is already started. If my analysis of the riding ends up wrong, and another candidate takes the riding, I will have a lot of catching up to do.

My hope is that we will be able to build a network of people, at least one in each of the ridings, to be able to make similar connections. Our political opponents have a lot of misinformation that they are spreading, based sometimes on anti-competitive reasons and sometimes simply a lack of experience. We need to educate as many people as we can to ensure that the rights of Canadians, both creators and users, are fully protected.
