Tories targeting 40 key unheld ridings in Quebec, Ontario

A Hill Times article by Simon Doyle, Abbas Rana and Bea Vongdouanchanh documents the 40 Conservative targeted ridings. The in-paper version included a table of the ridings, and I've linked this article with the 40 ridings so people will know if they are one of them.

Please try to talk to all Candidates about copyright, but especially talk to the Conservatives in these ridings. It would be great if during this election that the Conservatives could find their "Charlie Angus" -- someone who can switch the party from being anti-technology/modernization to being an advocate.

Liberal party finances may mean 3 rather than 4 by-elections

An article by John Ivison for the National Post discusses the latest speculation about when by-elections might be called. It suggests by-elections in Guelph, Westmount--Ville-Marie, and Saint Lambert will be called on July 20 with a vote set for Monday, September 8.

John Godfrey, the Liberal MP for Don Valley West, is not going to resign until August 1. Speculation is that this is because the Liberals are too cash-strapped to have 4 by-elections at the same time. If this is true, how can they afford a general election?

Sarmite Bulte lost nomination for Don Valley West

It is interesting the variety of places where this good news came from, but Sarmite Bulte did not win the nomination. She lost to Rob Oliphant. I don't know Rob Oliphant's views on copyright and the modern economy, but it would be hard to be more closed minded than Ms. Bulte.

This is good news for the Liberal party, given the last thing they need in the next election is Sam running against them in the Toronto area.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, please see past articles from the riding of Parkdale-High Park from before and during the 2006 election.

Sarmite Bulte seeking Liberal nomination again?

According to Susan Delacourt in the Toronto Star, Sam Bulte, the controversial MP previously of Parkdale High-Park seen as the architect of Canada's move towards a Canadian DMCA, is seeking the nomination in Don Valley West.

Lets hope the Liberals don't want to tie themselves to her regressive policies and won't let her run under their name. If they do, then that will likely harm the entire party during the next election.

Public interest group Online Rights Canada is hosting a Balanced Meal event to coincide with the big-money/big-copyright/big-media lobbiests event for Sam Bulte.

If politicians take tens of thousands of dollars from the industries they regulate, are independent artists, educators, librarians and the general public really going to get a fair shake? So come out on Thursday, have a bite to eat, and find out how regular Canadians can get a seat at the copyright reform table.
