Member of Parliament for Sherbrooke / Sherbrooke (Via Parl.gc.ca)
This was the last day of debate before the bill is sent to committee at second reading. In some ways we have returned to the same position we were a little less than a year ago when the government fell in March 2011. In other ways it appears that the general public, who will be greatly impacted by this bill, are far more engaged than they were at that time.
While the election is over, we in the tech community should consider this the beginning of the next level. We now need to transition into learning about all the local MPs, some who are first time politicians and some who are quite young. We need to meet with them so that they know the perspective on important federal issues from the independent technology community.
Some new NDP MPs who are already being discussed coincidentally replaced Bloc MPs who attended at least one of the Bill C-32 committee hearings.
Of the 12 members of the C-32 committee, two of them were from the Bloc Québécois. Carole Lavallée (Saint-Bruno—Saint-Hubert) and Serge Cardin (Sherbrooke) were there at each meeting, with Guy André (Berthier—Maskinong) being on-hand for one meeting just in case there was a vote (He didn't speak that I am aware of).
I believe the questions directed at me when I had an opportunity to speak before the committee were typical of what I heard other meetings.
So that constituents can find quickly what their past MP may have said at a C-32 committee, I've created the following table of meetings and which members of the committee were present at that meeting. The minutes and transcripts from the meeting are on the parliamentary website.
I have updated the page listing the MPs I have met with the members of the C-32 legislative committee that were present on March 8'th when I spoke to the committee.
Around the table it was:
Acting chair: Hon. Maxime Bernier (Chair Gordon Brown was away due to a death in his family)
Liberals: Pablo Rodriguez, Marc Garneau, Hon. Dan McTeague
Bloc: Carole Lavallée, Serge Cardin
NDP: Charlie Angus
Witnesses: David Fewer and I
Conservative: Ed Fast, Peter Braid, Dean Del Mastro, Mike Lake
A report from the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs lists the 11 members of the new Legislative Committee on Bill C-32 as follows:
Charlie Angus (Timmins—James Bay, NDP)
Addition (via twitter): Gordon Brown (Leeds—Grenville, Conservative) has been named Chair
A Hill Times article by Simon Doyle, Abbas Rana and Bea Vongdouanchanh documents the 40 Conservative targeted ridings. The in-paper version included a table of the ridings, and I've linked this article with the 40 ridings so people will know if they are one of them.
Please try to talk to all Candidates about copyright, but especially talk to the Conservatives in these ridings. It would be great if during this election that the Conservatives could find their "Charlie Angus" -- someone who can switch the party from being anti-technology/modernization to being an advocate.
