This theme is finally trickling through to the media. It's been a 
long time since Newton asserted that "I stand upon the shoulders of 
the giants of the past." Indeed the British two pound coin now has 
an inscription along it's edge "STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF 
GIANTS" to commemorate Newton (1642-1727).

In a nutshell, the position is this:
Nothing emerges from a vacuum.
Everything has background and context.
Content is part of a larger culture.
A Culture evolves as an integrated whole.
Cultures influence each other in a global context.
