   Is there a precedent that "private study" includes the ability to 
make unauthorized verbatim *COPIES* of digital media simply because you 
are the subject?

   We aren't talking about extracts for political commentary in the 
creation of a new work.  Much of the US "fair use" regime is aimed at 
follow-on creators (Balance between the past and the creativity that 
builds upon it), not straight "consumers" of the "product" which these 
"hypocrites" strictly are.
