Read: [next] [previous] message[d@DCC] Social cost of intellectual property reformsFrom: Darryl Moore <darryl _-at-_ mfe.ca> Dear Ms. Marshall I am writing to you regarding the federal governments recent tabling of Bill C-60, to amend the Copyright Act. As you are probably aware, there are many provisions within this act which go against the libraries stated policy on intellectual property. http://www.cla.ca/about/intfreed.htm Provisions of this bill make unreasonable requirements of libraries and educational institutions to lock down and restrict data so that they may make wide use of the same data. Other provision restrict how people may access their own legally purchased data, extend the term of some copyrights, and obscure copyright status, making it even more difficult to determine if a particular work is free to use or not. Please see www.digital-copyright.ca/billc60 for more information. (This is recent, and a work in progress) Additionally, there is a parliamentary petition at www.digital-copyright.ca/petition which has been signed by over 1800 Canadians and presented to Parliament by MPs on our behalf. This petition which predates the bill by several months none the less calls on Parliament to specifically reject many of the provisions of this bill. I am aware that the library board does not normally meet in the summer. However, this issue is of such great importance to libraries, schools, and Canadians in general, and the time to act is so short, that I am asking for the board to meet on it's tentative meeting date of July 11th to consider endorsing our position. I believe that the TPL endorsement and distribution of educational material through TPL branches would be an immense contribution to fixing this bill which was written primarily based on industry demands rather than social needs. Kind Regards, Darryl Moore Aurora ON (905) 727-4575 _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@list.digital-copyright.ca http://list.digital-copyright.ca/mailman/listinfo/discuss Read: [next] [previous] message List: [newer] [older] articles You need to subscribe to post to this forum. |
