Read: [next] [previous] message[d@DCC] human rights issues of intellectual propertyFrom: Darryl Moore <darryl _-at-_ mfe.ca> I am greatly disappointed to see that the CCLA does not appear to have any opinion on International copyright reform. This is very much a human rights issue which is being lost by core human rights groups such as yourselves. Large multinational corporations are calling for stronger intellectual property (IP) laws around the world to protect and/or extend their rights. What is missed by people such as yourselves is that for every IP right which is extended or protected by draconian means, a real property right or freedom of expression is being lost by all of society. These new laws have been used to limit free speech, restrict competition, and extort huge sums of money from the population. In Canada today we have Bill C-60 which will extend copyrights and limit access under fair dealing provisions. Though not as bad as some (like the US DMCA) it is a big step in the WRONG direction, and will be followed by much worse legislation. I would very much like to see a strong statement by the CCLA on this issue.
