Read: [next] [previous] message[d@DCC] Received reply from ATIP request -- need help decoding..From: Russell McOrmond <russell _-at-_ flora.ca> I received a reply to my ATIP request, but it is a CD of scanned images in TIF files. I have copied the CD to: http://www.flora.ca/A-2004-00246/ (Will add index page with better information later. I am on my way to Montreal for a few days.) I haven't had a chance to do anything with the files other than to figure out how to read a multi-page TIF file (use 'tiff2ps -a filename.TIF', and then read with a postscript viewer). I'm hoping someone has OCR software that they could use to try to turn all this back into text to put online. It is all stuff that Industry Canada "printed" to an image (received with PC fax software?). I am assuming the reason for the use of this poor quality format is to obfuscate the results. There are some parts of the documents that are blanked out because of "privacy" reasons documented in Section 19(1) of the Access to Information Act. I'll be interested to figure out what these relate to once we get into these documents. Note: In their letter they say they can give me a paper copy, but would charge me $77 for photocopy fees. (385 pages @ $0.20 = $77.00) File number is: A-2004-00246 I believe that anyone can request this file now if they wanted to receive a copy, a printout, or whatever. I may simply convert these pages to a single PDF and upload it to Lulu.com which can print/bind/etc it into a book which may be cheaper...
