7. News: New DRM Scheme Could Make Current DVD Players Obsolete
Hewlett-Packard and Royal Philips Electronics said Wednesday
that they have developed a content-protection system for
DVDs, designed to protect users from burning "protected" DTV
broadcasts. The encryption system will be built into
next-generation DVD players as well as media. Will your DVD
player soon be obsolete?

Note: As mentioned, this is tied to the bogus "broadcast flag" which is
not really a TPM, but a flag in an unencrypted broadcast. The claim is
that any device capable of receiving this type of signal will need to be
highly regulated and obey that flag. This part isn't a DRM issue but an
over-regulation issue.
The new DVD file format replaces DVD CSS with Video Content Protection
Scheme, or VCPS. Doing a google search for other articles shows quite a
bit.

I wonder what the DVD CCA thinks about this format, and whether they are
endorsing of opposing it.
