Ok, my subject line (like any good headline) is purposely inflammatory
but I have just finished reading "Free Culture" by Lawrence Lessig and I
was curious about how this discussion list feels about the blank media
tax system we currently have in place here in Canada.

The Lessig book is a very interesting read, well worth it for anyone
interested in copyright issues (if you aren't interested in copyright
issues then why are you on this mailing list?).

At the end of the book he suggests 5 points to improve copyright. It is
point #4 (summarized here) that I found particularly interesting in the
Canadian context.

In short; "... monitor how many items of each content were distributed.
On the basis of those numbers, then artists would be compensated ... by
an appropriate tax.

This closely describes the copyright levy on blank media system we
currently have in place in Canada.

So how do the people on this list feel about this concept?
