Read: [next] [previous] message[d@DCC] DVD Jon also cleared on appealFrom: Russell McOrmond <russell _-at-_ flora.ca> Great news: http://www.itworld.com/Man/2681/031222dvdjon/ In its ruling, the appellate court states that although DeCSS can be used to make illegal copies this was not Johansen's intent, and in addition, he has not made copies in violation of intellectual property regulations, Manshaus said. "The ruling draws up a line of demarcation between the interests of owners and distributors of intellectual property on the one side, and consumers on the other," Manshaus said. "This ruling will be an important precedent in the application of existing intellectual property regulations on digital media." Note: I really wish the incorrect statement that DeCSS had anything to do with copying would be discontinued. This is an access control technology that seeks to tie the viewing of movies with specific content producer authorized viewers, something I believe should be found illegal under the "tied selling" provisions of our competition act. The CSS technology is unrelated in any way to the ability to copy the movie, just the ability to view a copy. --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: <http://www.flora.ca/> Governance software that controls ICT, automates government policy, or electronically counts votes, shouldn't be bought any more than politicians should be bought. -- http://www.flora.ca/russell/ ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2003 12:06:41 -0600 From: Kevin Mack <kevmack@accesscomm.ca> Reply-To: discuss@canopener.ca To: discuss@losurs.org, discuss@canopener.ca Subject: [discuss] Christmas present... The acquittal of Jon Lech Johansen (aka "DVD Jon") was upheld by the Norwegian appeals court; the only downside is the prosecution still has the option of pursuing this to the country's supreme court. http://www.itworld.com/Man/2681/031222dvdjon/ _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list discuss@canopener.ca http://www.canopener.ca/mailman/listinfo/discuss -- For (un)subscription information, posting guidelines and links to other related sites please see http://www.digital-copyright.ca Read: [next] [previous] message List: [newer] [older] articles You need to subscribe to post to this forum. |
