Read: [next] [previous] message[d@DCC] SARS and public domain patent..From: Russell McOrmond <russell _-at-_ flora.ca> For those who haven't read this yet: SARS gene patent application will help cure research, says B.C. Cancer Agency http://weblog.flora.org/article.php3?story_id=405 Free/Libre and Open Source medical research -- what a novel concept *sigh* I happen to believe that researchers should be given a choice between government granted economic incentives in the form of public research grants/funds, or the temporary monopolies in the form of patents. Organizations (including/especially educational institutions) should never be able to receive both. This organization should also not need to go through the expense of filing a patent, but should be able to file "prior art" in a less expensive way that will accomplish the same purpose: grant the moral rights to say "we discovered it first" without there existing an exclusive monopoly. The best case scenario is if adequate economic analysis happened around different subject matter, and information process patents (such as software and business model patents) and genetic patents were excluded from being patentable. --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: <http://www.flora.ca/> Any 'hardware assist' for communications, whether it be eye-glasses, VCR's, or personal computers, must be under the control of the citizen and not a third party. -- http://www.flora.ca/russell/ ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 09:19:35 -0300 From: Ricardo Andere de Mello Cc: fsl-discuss@alt.org, DMCA-Activists@gnu.org, DMCA_Discuss@lists.microshaft.org, fairuse-discuss@nyfairuse.org, Patent forum <patents@aful.org>, C-FIT_Community@realmeasures.dyndns.org Subject: [Patents] SARS and public domain patent.
